FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Can I attend a DART launch? Do I need to be a DART member?

  • DART launches are free and open to the public. You’re welcome to attend and participate or just observe.
  • You do not need to be a member of DART to attend the launch, but you’re welcome to join. DART membership dues pay for the launch site permits and launch gear maintenance. A membership application is available on the website.

What time should I get there?

  • DART launches start at 8 AM and end at noon.
  • The best flying conditions are generally before 10:30 AM. After 11:00, the onshore winds can get a bit breezy.

Do I need to bring my own launch gear?

  • No. DART provides low power launch pads (1/8″ and 3/16″ launch rods) and mid-power launchers (1010 rails, minirail).
  • DART provides and operates a central launch controller, per our agreement with the FAA.
  • DART also provides free “dog barf” wadding, which is more environmentally friendly than Estes “toilet paper” wadding.
  • Note: DART does not provide 1/4″ launch rods. Larger rockets must use rail guides (1010 or minirail).

This is my first launch, at least in a while. Any tips or suggestions?

Is there an altitude limit for my rocket flights?

  • Yes. The maximum altitude is 1,000 feet, per our operating agreement with the FAA.
  • If there is any question about the anticipated altitude, we can perform a quick estimate/analysis prior to flight.

Does DART provide any facilities on the field?

  • No. You are welcome to bring your own chairs, prep table, and shade.
  • There are several park-provided porta-potties on Fiesta Island.  One is located near the southwest corner of the launch field.
